Abstract
This study aims to investigate the possibility of recreating the historical components of Iranian and European music within the contemporary composition process. The central research problem addresses how to establish a structured relationship between the theoretical and practical heritage of the Systematist School (Montazamiyeh), certain organizational logics of medieval European music, and the capacities of Iranian Dastgāhi music. The study is organized based on a practice-based research approach, utilizing Valerie Ross’s methodological framework. A historical-comparative method was also employed to analyze sources, compare musical components, and explain their structural capacities. The primary material for the composition process was a tasnif attributed to Abd al-Qadir Maraghi, starting with the line “Amad Nasim-e Sobhdam…” (The Morning Breeze Has Blown…), which is structured in the Rast mode with specific formal and rhythmic (Iqa’ic) characteristics. The outcome of this process is a piece titled Shadd-e Mahoor for ney, kamancheh, santur, and oud. In the structure of this work, the historical concept of Shadd was utilized as a strategy for organizing the modal trajectory, transforming the melodic material, and maintaining textual continuity. Furthermore, antiphonal, responsorial, rota, virelai/rondeaux, caccia, hocket, fauxbourdon, various types of organum, and elements of isorhythm and hexachords were structurally analyzed and subsequently reinterpreted as compositional strategies compatible with the language of Dastgāhi music. The findings indicate that if the organizing logic of these components is abstracted and adapted to the modal, rhythmic, textural, and instrumental features of Iranian music, they possess the capacity to contribute to the contemporary creative process. The trial performance of the piece in an educational setting also played a role in revising certain compositional decisions and refining the score. The results of the study emphasize the role of practice-based composition in producing practical knowledge and critically formulating the relationship between historical analysis and creative decisions.
