Edges are linear elements with generally extroverted functions which define a border between two sections. These elements may be defined by built elements or may be located on natural geographic features. This paper analyses the special functional features of urban edges that are located on natural coastal features. It is considered that natural urban edges that are created as a result of overlaying on natural features can be functionaaly considered as a public space in the city. Urban edges also affect the image of the city directly. But how can these kinds of urban edges perform in configuring city structure subjectively and objectively?<br />The geographical domain of this research is the cities of India. Therefore, three case studies were investigated in India in order to answer the research question. Ganga River in Varanasi city, the edge of Pushkar Lake and Mumbai seashore are the three cases where the urban edges overlay the natural feature of the shore. Discussing these three cases reflect how commercial functions, creation of ritual space, formation of public space, people presence and public interaction along the shoreline can be concluded as a result of urban edge overlay on natural features. یکی از عناصر پنج‌گانه معرفی شده برای سیمای شهر، لبه‌ها است. لبه‌ها عناصری خطی هستند که عموماً واجد کارکردی برون‌گرا بوده و مرز میان دو بخش را مشخص می‌کنند. این عناصر ممکن است به‌صورت مصنوع ایجاد شده و یا منطبق بر عوارض طبیعی باشد. مقاله حاضر به تحلیل کارکردهای ویژه لبه‌های شهری منطبق بر عوارض طبیعی ساحلی می‌پردازد و به این موضوع توجه دارد که لبه‌های شهری طبیعی که درنتیجه انطباق لبه شهری و عوارض طبیعی حاصل می‌شوند، علاوه بر تأثیری که در سیمای شهر دارند به لحاظ کاربردی نیز می‌توانند به‌عنوان‌ یک فضای جمعی در شهر عمل کنند. سؤال این است که انطباق لبه‌های شهری با عناصر طبیعی نظیر رودخانه، دریاچه و یا ساحل دریا، چه آثاری می‌تواند در پی داشته باشد؟<br />قلمرو جغرافیایی این پژوهش، شهرهای هندوستان است. بنابراین، به‌منظور پاسخ به این سؤال، سه نمونه موردی در کشور هند بررسی شد. رود گنگ در شهر بنارس، لبه دریاچه پوشکار و لبه ساحل بمبئی، سه نمونه مطالعاتی هستند که در آن‌ها، لبه‌ای شهری بر روی عناصر طبیعی ساحلی منطبق شده‌اند. بررسی این سه نمونه نشان می‌دهد که چگونه ایجاد کاربری‌های تجاری، ایجاد فضاهای آیینی، شکل‌گیری فضاهای جمعی و حضور شهروندان و تعاملات اجتماعی ایشان در کنار لبه‌های طبیعی، می‌تواند به‌عنوان آثار و نتایج انطباق لبه‌های شهری و عوارض طبیعی به حساب آید. http://www.jaco-sj.com/article_42622_8af69d2baafa5a3a9bc1bcdecec02add.pdf
