Abstract
Throughout the history of art, the lion has consistently functioned as a symbolic animal across various civilizations, including Iranian culture. This ancient motif has manifested in diverse forms within Iranian art and architecture, conveying a wide range of meanings. The semantic analysis and iconographic study of this motif provide profound insights into the national-indigenous culture and the artistic methods employed by regional artists to express particular concepts.
This research, through field surveys of Kazerun's cultural heritage and library-based documentary studies, aims to: (a) conduct a semiotic analysis of the lion motif; (b) identify the contexts in which this motif has been utilized; (c) examine the physical and formal characteristics of the lion motifs found in Kazerun County; and (d) explore how the artists' intended meanings are conveyed through the physical traits and behavioral postures of the lion within the artistic compositions of these selected examples.
The study adopts a survey-based and comparative-historical methodology, grounded in Erwin Panofsky's iconological model. It addresses two primary research questions: (1) What symbolic forms has the lion motif assumed throughout the history of Kazerun? and (2) What symbolic meanings are embedded within this motif in Kazerun's artistic tradition?
The manifestations of the lion motif in Kazerun's cultural heritage include Sassanid and Qajar period reliefs, the structure and ornamentation of historical tombstones, stone carvings and stucco decorations found in both urban and rural dwellings, as well as contemporary urban design elements. The symbolic meanings conveyed in these examples are determined by several variables, including the scale of the motif and the lion's figure, formal details, facial expressions, and the motif's juxtaposition with other visual elements.
The findings indicate that the lion motif has been continuously employed in the Kazerun region from the Sassanid era up to the present day, serving three primary functions: symbolic and allegorical representation, narrative documentation of historical events, and mythological construction.
